OOSTBURG - Carlton Automotive has risen from the ashes of a fire a year ago to build a new state-of-the-art facility just off of Interstate 43.

Just before 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 23, 2016, a leaky gas-tank in a car being worked on in the shop caught fire, which spread and burned down a large section of the Carlton Automotive businesses.

When the fire broke out, owner Carl Roethel was not on site, but was just a few blocks away at a car wash.

“My pager went off and I heard the address and thought,  what’s going on now,'” he laughed.

Roethel, who was assistant fire chief in Oostburg at the time, and six of his employees are all firefighters. Three were working at the time of the blaze.

“After they determined they could not do anymore, they ran to the fire house, got their gear, and worked feverishly to put the fire out,” Roethel said.

At the time, the automotive shop was housed in an older building, constructed in the 1940's, and an addition built in 2000. The addition was destroyed in the fire.

“We lost half our facility at that point,” he said. “With the help of our employees, we were up and running and working on cars again the following Monday. We were all packed into one building.”

Roethel said he always dreamed of building a state-of-the art shop — and the fire accelerated those plans. Construction documents were drawn up in the months after the fire and the company broke ground in July on a new building just off of Interstate 43 in Oostburg.

“We hope to grow the business," Roethel said. "We are the entrance to the Village of Oostburg and wanted to have a nice looking entrance to the village as well.”

The new building nearly doubles the size of the business, from 6,500 square feet before to around 12,000 today. The number of hoists was increased from 8 to 10 and the number of work-bays was increased from nine to 15.

“Right now, we have six technicians. I’d like to get up to eight at some point,” Roethel said.

The new facility also includes more space for offices, a customer waiting area, in-floor heat throughout and a parts storage room.

“Before we never had a parts area," Roethel  said. "We just had stuff hanging on walls wherever we could find room."

Vehicle Missteps to Avoid

Owning a vehicle goes beyond just driving it to and from your destination each day. With owning a vehicle comes a responsibility of taking care of your car and making sure that it drives dependably. Here at the most common vehicle missteps in maintenance to avoid to save you money and hassle:    Don’t ignore your check engine light. If you see your vehicle’s check engine light turn on and stay on, it is time to have your vehicle inspected. You may not know the severity of the issue, and if it is a major problem, it can get progressively worse and more expensive if you ignore the warning and continue driving.    Always change your oil and other fluids on time. Forgetting to get an oil change can have dire consequences, including leading to irreversible engine damage and corrosion. Engine damage is extremely expensive, so staying on top of your vehicle’s oil changes will protect your wallet. Other key fluids need to ... read more

Notice a Strange Smell While Driving?

A strange smell coming from your vehicle can be extremely pungent, especially when it is coming through your air vents. Although it isn’t uncommon to get a random whiff of a regular car scent one in a while, a persistent smell every time you drive your car can indicate an issue within. Here are the most common smells associated with car issues and what they can mean:   Rotten eggs - The smell of rotten eggs can indicate an issue with your emissions system, and more specifically the catalytic converter. This is an important problem to repair quickly, especially because a failing emissions system can put you and your passengers at risk to being exposed to harsh gases.    Burning smell - A burning smell can come from a few different places, but most commonly can indicate a timing belt or drive belt issue. It can also indicate engine and transmission problems.    Gas - If you notice a constant gas smell while driving, it is important to have it checked out ... read more

Can I Change my Own Motor Oil?

You may see commercial or ads for motor oil and think - can I change my vehicle’s oil myself? Unless you are a mechanic, the technical answer is no, not really. You can purchase oil and fill your oil chamber, but all that does is add new oil on top of old oil, and can cause problems in the long run when it comes to your engine.    When you get an oil change at your local auto repair shop, more is completed than just switching out or topping off oil. Old oil is taken out, and the entire system is flushed, to clean out grime, dirt, and debris that may have settled within the system. The oil chamber is also thoroughly cleaned to prevent build-up and blockage. These steps are very important to the overall health of your engine and the effectiveness of the motor oil system.    When you get an oil change at an auto shop, your filter is also changed. The filter is what catches dirt and debris as oil filters through it. Running your vehicle on a dirty oil filter wil ... read more
